Taking It Easy!
A Guide to the Beautiful Beaches of Koh Tao, Thailand
Part of a tropical paradise is just lying on the beach and letting the world go by. You will lose track of time on Koh Tao. There are a myriad of little beaches dotting the south and east coasts of Koh Tao.
A short walk over a headland and you can discover a beach devoid of travelers, a beach to yourself. If you are into walking there are also walks up into the mountains, for great views and the occasional glimpse of the enormous monitor lizards indigenous to the island.
If you're lazy, you can see it all by boat, hiring one of the local longtails to take you around the island with a bit of fishing or snorkeling. Or, if you're even lazier still, buy a postcard and lie on the beach in front of Buddha View Resort.
The Southern Beaches of Koh Tao
- Chalok Baan Kao - great views of Buddha Rock and Viewpoint headland. Volleyball on the beach each afternoon and with a bit of wind kite surfers are out regularly.
- Freedom Beach - the best swimming beach in Chalok Baan Kao. Plenty of privacy to catch an all over tan.
- Shark Bay - a short walk over the headland from Chalok Baan Kao gives access to exciting snorkeling with baby reef sharks.
- Aow Leuk - the best snorkeling beach on Koh Tao. Accessible with motorbike and a short walk,
Aow Leuk is still home to green turtles and a beautiful beach. Popular dive destination.
The Western Beaches of Koh Tao
- Sai Tong - secluded beach most easily accessed by boat.
- Jansom Bay - a secluded bay just outside of town.
- Mae Haad - not the best place to go swimming, it is, afterall, the location of the boat pier and town.
- Haad Sairee - the longest and most developed beach on Koh Tao. Plenty of bars dotted along the beach.
The Eastern Beaches of Koh Tao
- Laem Thian - difficult access road, but picturesque rock formations and good snorkeling. Good diving.
- Tanote Bay - good snorkeling and adequate road access.
- Hin Wong - difficult access road but beautiful bay.
The Northern Beaches of Koh Tao
- Mango Bay - very difficult to get to by road but worth a boat ride. Popular shallow water training are for diving.
- Nangyuan - three islands joined by a beach. Popular destination for snorkeling and shallow dives.
